Jorge Morales

As of one six at large members on the LGHN Central Texas Chapter Board, Jorge Morales helps oversee the operations of the chapter. He currently serves as Director of the Watershed Protection Department at the City of Austin. Since 2019, he has led the department in creating strategies and priorities that protect lives, properties, and the environment from the impacts of flooding, erosion, and water pollution. Mr. Morales earned a civil engineering degree from the University of Texas at Austin and received a master’s degree from the LBJ School of Public Affairs.

Why did you decide to serve on the board of LGHN Central Texas Chapter?

I’m very passionate about mentoring and inspiring folks to grow personally and professionally. I also believe that giving back to the community is critical, which why I continue to volunteer at my church and in local organizations. I couldn’t have made it as a Latino kid from Dallas to executive at the City of Austin without the guidance and wisdom that my mentors provided me along the way. LGHN will be an avenue for our community to make connections that will have a positive impact in our lives for years to come.

What do you hope to accomplish through your leadership on the LGHN?

I want to show people like me what is truly possible. Latinos make up the largest ethnic group in Texas, but they’re often underrepresented in executive roles in government. Through LGHN, I hope we can create a network of professionals that support each other and can serve as role models for future generations of public servants.

What advice do you have for anyone who’s striving to achieve success in the public sector?

iDale más ganas! Persistence and passion are key to accomplishing your goals. By taking your time to develop expertise in your field and being intentional with your professional strategy, you will be able to reach the milestones needed to advance in your career. Also, visibility is important – don’t be afraid to voice your knowledge and take up space. Finally, be open to change and adapt to evolving times and work cultures. You can’t get too comfortable in any position or organization.
