McKinney has a council-manager form of government with home rule status. The Planning Department’s mission is to facilitate the creation of safe, balanced, efficient, visually-appealing, and economically sustainable developments within McKinney’s ultimate planning area. The Planning Department concurrently protects the larger public interest by soliciting and incorporating the public’s feedback on land use and policy recommendations. The Department works closely with elected and appointed officials to ensure that existing policies and regulations accurately reflect the City Council’s community goals and objectives. The Planning Manager reports to the Planning Director and is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Development Review Section as well as professional, technical, and clerical personnel. The Planning Department consists of 17 staff members and operates with an annual budget of $2 million. Positions reporting directly to the Planning Manager include, four planners, one senior planning technician, one planning technician, and one arborist.

The City of McKinney seeks a highly qualified professional to fill the vital role of Planning Manager. A bachelor’s degree in planning, public policy, urban studies, historic preservation, or a closely related field is required along with at least five years of previous experience in progressively responsible leadership roles, including at least two years of experience in a supervisory capacity in the public or private sector. A master’s degree and/or American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification is a plus. The compensation range for the Planning Manager position is $75,340 - $113,010 annually.
